Living in America 6
Satonobo's Life in America Part 6
It's the second half of November in 2024. I'm following the flow of my last blog . The rainy season has finally begun, and the number of days with overcast skies is increasing. It seems that in the high-latitude Seattle area, some people are known to develop seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the winter when the daylight hours are shorter. I thought the depression I experienced last year was caused by stress from the tension of a new life, but this is also a very possible reason. I once again want to call the sun Tendō-sama. Talking about overcast skies has made the content of my talk overcast as well. Let's get out of here for now! (laughs)
◆My Own Community This fall, I've been taking classes at Bellevue College, and I've been spending my days in a very fulfilling way. Twice a week, I've been having discussions with classmates from various backgrounds on the theme of environmental issues. I originally joined the class because I wanted to gain confidence in English conversation in preparation for my Kogin activities in the United States, but now I'm feeling a different kind of benefit. Of course, I've realized the effect of it being a place to practice English, but more than that , I've been able to remember the comfort of time to think and learn . It's really fun to think deeply, deeply, isn't it? There are times when I struggle to think, and I'm amazed at how long I've been living in a daze, but I'm blessed with a warm and professional teacher and classmates who are passionate about their goals and are working hard in class, and I feel a light shining in various colors in my heart.
A new goal was born for me: I would like to build such relationships with students who are participating in the class, a space where they can respect each other's opinions and feel free to speak up . I am also grateful for the fact that having my own community separate from my family can contribute so much to my mental health.
◆ Future Kogin embroidery community at Satonobo The current class is diverse in age, country of origin, and occupation. Teachers, psychologists, journalists, doctors, designers, engineers, and everyone has had a variety of experiences living in America, but the way we interact in class is naturally equal. From this experience, I once again realized that I would be happy to meet people who enjoy Kogin embroidery together, regardless of their experience or age, just like in the past. I think it's really fun to share each other's strengths and express our thoughts on one thing from each perspective.
"In the spirit of staying positive and looking for solutions." (Looking for solutions with a positive attitude) I find it appealing to exchange opinions with this mindset. Even in difficult times, I hope we can move forward, even if just a half step at a time.
◆ Satonobo's future involvement with Kogin embroideryThe final assignment was a presentation on environmental issues, and I decided to present it in conjunction with Kogin embroidery. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to think about the appeal of Kogin embroidery from the perspective of environmental issues. It has been about 10 years since I started Kogin embroidery, and I wasn't sure how far into the future I would be involved with Kogin embroidery, but I think I will be involved with Kogin embroidery for a few more years. This is how I envision the future of Satonobo.
